War Machines and machines of War

April’s All Day meeting hadonly 2 games on offer. Brian and Mike gave War Machine an outing. I am not too familiar with this system, but there are more and more converts to it in the club.

 The lads cetainly seem to be having a great game.

Another system we play off and on is the Rate of Fire WWII skirmish rules from Crusader. The AFV came out at the end of last year, but we have only now managed to get a game in.

 Terry advances the US Infantry with a Sherman in Support.

Dave advances a StuG 3 with Fallchrimjager in support.

 A nice system, and we are happy with how the tanks have been integrated into what is essentially an infantry skirmish game. We will probably see more of this system in the coming months.

New Year and Old Armies

Well another year is upon us, and the club has some old favourites on offer this week.

Dereks Empire Knights advance on Daves…

Empire!  A bit of a practice game for dave with Warhammer 8th Edition. Same faction battles can be good fun. And it was a race to see if Dereks Cannon could beat Dave’s Steam tank into chewing up the opposition first,a full on carnage later and dave’s decimated troops were slightly less decimated than Derek’s Flagellants. A great game.

 Flames of War was also in evidence, but this time more odd pairings with US vs UK clash…obviously a training exercise before pitting themselves against the hun!

Some of the 15mm British in the Flames of War game move around a wooded hill.

And finally more WW2 this time in 20mm using the Peter Guilder rules. German Mortar teams set up in a church yard.

And the Allies push to drive them out, among the Bocage

“Romanes Eunt Dommus”

What did the Romans ever do for us?…..well gave a very good game against the Celts at last nights club meeting using Warhammer Ancient Battles V2.0!

Roman Auxilia launch javelins at the Barbarian horde, supported by a cohort of Legionnaries

Roman Artillery, flanked by Auxilia Cavalry,new units to my Collection, face off against Celtic Noble Cav and a unit of Charriots, as Celtic slingers run up in support. Romans are all Warlord miniatures, Celts are Navigator Minis from Magister Militum.

Meanwhile Steve and Pete run a large 20mm WW2 game in the snow,using the Peter Guilder rules they have modified and expanded over the years

German Nashorn battle line prepares to mete out long range punishment to the Soviet hordes

                                                                       But the soviets have air superiority and advance under the support of a Tupolev bomber,a recent addition to Peter’s Collection.

Meanwhile Steve gets some practice games in, for this years Fantasy Tournament, Acturati 2010

As does Wayne, our local GW store manager, and good friend and member of the club, with a new member he brought along this evening

AND Terry and Tom….yes WHFB is alive and kicking at the club!

As is Round Base!! Ultra Marines Vs Ultra Marines, hmmm must be a training exercise for when my Orks turn up!

Remember we always welcome new members to the club, as long as you are 18 or over, you too can take part in epic battles in miniature every week!

Armed Forces Day

For armed forces day I thought that posting this is appropriate

Tommy

I WENT into a public ‘ouse to get a pint o’beer,
The publican ‘e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:
O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins,” when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s “Thank you, Mr. Atkins,” when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music ‘alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;
But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.
Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.

Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy how’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll.
We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints:
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;

While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an “Tommy, fall be’ind,”
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir,” when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir,” when there’s trouble in the wind.
You talk o’ better food for us, an’schools, an’ fires an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.

For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country,” when the guns begin to shoot;
Yes it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
But Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool–you bet that Tommy sees!

Pegasus and Horsa Bridge Memorial Project 65

After last weeks club Mark mentioned that whilst looking for painting details for the Horsa Gliders for our big D Day Flames of war game at MK he had come across the project 65 site. He then bumped into them at the river festival where they had a stand- they are raising money to:

honour the memory of the men who took part in the Coup de Main operation to capture the bridges on the Caen Canal and River Orne in the early hours of D-Day 65 years ago.

The organisers of Project 65 aim to raise £500,000, part of which will be used to erect a simple but lasting memorial to the men of the Coup de Main force and those directly associated with that operation 65 years ago. The memorial will be erected directly in front of the original bridge within the grounds of the museum which now displays the original bridge over the Orne Canal.

The idea is that a team of fund raising volunteers will leave Tarrant Rushton Airfield on June 4th next year and run 65 miles to arrive at Pegasus Bridge to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6th 2009.

They have one of the sons of the radio operator who landed in the no 1 glider with Maj John Howard taking part.

The project 65 site can be found here
