Some Carnegie Mellon students have been playing with a Microsoft surface and have a demo of using the surface to play DnD.

They say:

The objective of the SurfaceScapes project is to create a proof-of-concept for playing tabletop role-playing games on the Microsoft Surface Table. We will be using Dungeons and Dragons as a basis for our prototype, with the option for future expansion to other role-playing games. SurfaceScapes will provide Game Masters and players with a set of features to enhance the combat and role-playing aspects of tabletop games. This will include the ability to interact with the digital environment using real objects such as miniatures and provide automated calculations and visual and audio feedback for actions performed by the player and non-player characters. We are taking traditional tabletop role-playing games to the next level, adding a new layer of immersive and intuitive gaming to the Microsoft Surface Table and assisting both GMs and players in enjoying exciting and engaging adventures.

The Microsoft Surface is a multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way. With a large, horizontal user interface, Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with data and each other.

GW games were well represented, with two Warhammer games, and one 40K game being played.

Our game for Colours this year was  was “Picketts Charge,with Elves” using High Elves for the Union, and Dark Elves for the Confederates, we played 4 games of the 3rd day at Gettysburg,using Fire and Fury Rules.

We had a great amount of interest from the Public, and 2 magazines took pictures, so we may well be in Battlegames, and Miniature Wargames in a few months!

Last Monday we had a range of games on show with the new Faction for AT43 the Cogs getting an outing and soundly thumping Maurice’s Red Block.

Does my bum look big in this the Cog type 3 AVF the Vandal showing off. This was the  unit that did most of the damage to the Red Block. (thanks to Dave for lending his new Cogs box out)

We also had another test game for our Warhammer competition (it must be a test as you can see unpainted figures)

Just heard via the D6 Generation of an interesting hybrid between computer based games and more traditional figure based games.

Ex illis uses traditional plastic figures as is now more common ala games workshop or rakham, though these figures are snap together and unpainted.

Last Sunday we had a mini (very mini) 40K Campaign with 750pt army’s. Unfortunately we only had 4 players as people had had to drop out through work/family commitments. I even I stepped in thanks to Dave for lending me his Chaos marines. We used a 4×4 table for this low points value games.
